I love this story about spending QUALITY time with God in His Word:
Like many Christians, Frank learned that to truly have God guide his daily steps, he needed to spend time with Him each morning. He found a plan titled “Through the Bible in One Year" and committed to reading three chapters in the morning and two at night.
However, the inspiration he anticipated eluded him. He discussed this issue with his friend Carl, mentioning, “I wasn’t sure how I could fit Bible reading into my mornings, but I manage to squeeze it in. Sometimes, I have to rush through the chapters a bit, yet I always recall what I’ve read. You could quiz me, and I’d get an ‘A.’ So why do I feel as if I haven’t truly absorbed it?”
Carl responded, “It seems you’re approaching the Bible as if it’s a textbook. If you want to grasp the meanings behind the words, pray before you read and ask God to reveal insights to you. Instead of viewing the Bible as a task, consider it a special meeting with God—a time dedicated to hearing what He wants to convey to you.”
“I understand,” Frank replied. “I was stuck in the old ‘what’s in it for me?’ mindset, waiting for God to reward my effort.”
“Allocate more time for reading and studying,” Carl recommended. “Even an additional few minutes can significantly impact your understanding. Just keep in mind: the more time you dedicate to God, the more He will return to you. Your day will unfold much more smoothly if you allow Him to set the pace and listen for His guidance.”
While it's essential to read the Scriptures daily, it's even more crucial to read until you feel God has communicated something to you. I still remember Chuck Swindoll's words from a sermon many years ago. He suggested that instead of racing through the Bible like a marathon each year, consider focusing on one of the books or letters and immersing yourself in it for an entire month. In other words, don't worry too much about the number of verses or chapters you cover; the key is to read with a receptive heart.
16 I will delight in your statutes;
I will not forget your word.
~ Psalm 119:16
Here’s to hearing from the Lord,
Gene
