When I reflect on commitment, I frequently think of Old Testament prophets such as Jeremiah. His messages were so unpopular that some aimed to take his life, yet he continued to proclaim God’s words. As if that were not enough, others slandered him, while some ridiculed his faithfulness and commitment to God. The ridicule seems to have bothered Jeremiah most as he writes in Jeremiah 20:7-8;

O Lord, you have deceived me, and I was deceived; you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me. For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the Lord has become for me a reproach and derision all day long.

Later in his life, Jeremiah becomes imprisoned and faces threats to his life from the rulers of Judah. He is accused of treason and branded a national disgrace. It's no surprise that he has earned the title of the weeping prophet. However, the narrative doesn’t end there. As you continue reading, you'll discover that his grim predictions were realized, and ultimately it was his adversaries who faced humiliation.

As believers, we often face ridicule and disdain because we share a message of doom for those who do not know Jesus as Savior. We are mocked, scorned, and some even martyred for following Jesus while steadfastly declaring that He alone is the way, the truth, and the life; and that no one can enter heaven without faith in Him!

Unfortunately, many self-identified Christians today hold a relaxed perspective on their responsibilities. As we approach the weekend, I want to emphasize this point: committing wholeheartedly to the Lord means understanding that a cost is involved. But just think about the result! I recently spoke with a retired gentleman who had worked on Wall Street. I shared stories about my family's travels, particularly in missions, and he remarked that he should have chosen my career. I placed my arm around him and replied that I’m sure he earned more money in his lifetime than I ever will. The distinction for me is that I pursue ministry not for financial gain, but for the positive impact it brings! In other words, I’m not in ministry for the income, but I’m in it for the outcome!

What about you, Christian? Are you pursuing income, or are you striving for a lasting outcome that transcends earthly concerns? The benefits of our dedication today will greatly surpass any sacrifices we make now!

Blessings on your faith journey,

Gene
