The writer of Hebrews writes—“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,”—Hebrews 12:1

I know it's a cliché to say, but it's true: as believers, we are all in a race—a marathon of faith. Our finish line is our dwelling place with Jesus, and the path is marked out for us by God. But as we run, the pull of sin is a constant challenge, threatening to slow us down, trip us up, and seek to disqualify us. Just ask the Apostle Paul, see Romans 7.

Our verse uses a powerful imagery of an ancient athletic contest. Just as a runner would strip off any heavy or loose clothing holding them back, we are called to do the same spiritually.

Consider two musts to discard:

“Every weight”: These are things that, while not sins, can hinder our spiritual progress. This includes time-consuming hobbies, unhealthy relationships, or even good things we prioritize too much, diverting our focus from God. Anything that drains our spiritual energy or distracts us is a weight to shed.

“The sin which clings so closely”: This refers to persistent temptations or "besetting sins" that repeatedly trip us up. For each person, this sin varies—pride, lust, anger, fear, or lack of self-control. It's dangerous because it entangles us, hindering progress in our race.

Take a moment this week to reflect honestly on your life. Identify what weighs you down and what sin entangles you most. Confess, repent, and choose to "lay it aside”. We can't fight alone; the Holy Spirit empowers us to overcome sin. As verse 2 says, fix your eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. He ran the race perfectly and gives us grace for every step.

Heavenly Father, thank you for those who have run before us. Help us to set aside every weight and sin that entangles us. Give us courage and strength to run with endurance, keeping our eyes on Jesus, our Savior and guide. May we finish strong and hear Your "well done." In Jesus' name, Amen.

Running with you,
