Persecution occurred in Thessalonica as a group broke from social norms by adopting a radical new faith in Jesus instead of state-sanctioned idol worship. However, Jesus hadn’t returned as quickly as hoped. So, the apostle Paul was concerned by what he was hearing and wrote two letters to them.
Paul had reason to be concerned, and so, in his letters, he writes to encourage the fledgling yet faithful community of believers, informing them that when faced with difficulties, as followers of Jesus, our Faith doesn’t sit still; it moves forward.
In 1 Thessalonians 4:1, we read these words of Paul's—“Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more.”
The Christian life is often called a "walk"—a continuous journey, not a static state. Paul then gives practical instructions for daily living: keep moving forward.
Paul commends the Thessalonian believers for living to please God and encourages them to do so "more and more," not as a rebuke but as motivation for continued spiritual growth, reminding us that there's always room to deepen our faith.
"Moving forward" in the Christian life signifies:
Intentional Growth: Spiritual maturity requires intentional effort to align actions, thoughts, and desires with God's will. We must actively pursue holiness and love.
Applying the Word: The Thessalonians received clear instructions on how to live, and we have God's Word as our guide. Moving forward requires applying biblical teaching daily, letting Scripture shape our conduct and guard against cultural drift.
Abounding in the Right Areas: Paul emphasizes growth in sexual purity and brotherly love, urging us to excel in these virtues and distinguish ourselves from the world.
The motivation for this movement isn't legalistic but a loving response to God's grace and the Holy Spirit. Our goal is to please God, who is already pleased with us in Christ, by reflecting His character more fully.
So, are you a "stationary" Christian or a moving-forward Christian?
Today, let's commit to pursuing deeper holiness and fruitfulness, striving to please God more in every area.
Heavenly Father, thank You for new life in Christ and Your Word's guidance. We admit we become complacent at times. Empower us with Your Holy Spirit to walk worthily and please You daily. Help us move forward intentionally and joyfully on Your path. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Striving to Move Forward,
Gene
