We're living in one of the most divided times I've ever known, and I understand how challenging that can be. I often find myself wondering how I can follow Jesus wholeheartedly while still reaching out to those who see things very differently from me.
Please know, I don’t have all the answers—none of us do— but each day, I draw comfort from Paul’s words to the Philippians: "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20) These words serve as a gentle reminder of what truly matters and help me hold onto hope.
In today’s climate of intense political disagreement, it’s understandable to feel discouraged or overwhelmed by the divisions we see around us. Remember, every political platform falls short of God's perfect standard. When you face this challenge, the Bible gently guides us to adopt an "upward perspective," reminding us of where our true citizenship lies.
This doesn’t mean we should withdraw from society. As members of a representative democracy, we have both the privilege and responsibility to vote and voice our opinions, always aiming to reflect a biblical worldview in every aspect of life, including our government. We are called to be salt and light, actively influencing our culture with integrity and love.
At the same time, it’s important to keep our hopes and salvation from resting in any human leader or political party. Our ultimate hope is rooted in Jesus, the King of Kings, who is diligently bringing His Kingdom to earth.
Here are some principles you might consider:
Prioritize God's Kingdom: “Seek first God's kingdom and righteousness, and all will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). No earthly political affiliation should surpass your commitment to Christ.
Act in Humility and Love: Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others more significant (Philippians 2:3). Engage respectfully, listening to different perspectives to understand and love them better.
Stand for Truth in love: Act in love (1 Corinthians 16:14). Be firm on key moral issues like life and marriage, but speak truth kindly, avoiding bitterness or slander.
Remember the True Battle: We do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, cosmic powers of this darkness, and spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). Our political opponents are not our ultimate enemies; the spiritual forces of evil are.
Promote Christian Unity: ...whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother (Matthew 12:50). Do not let political differences divide you from fellow believers. Model a "diverse unity" to a watching world that desperately needs to see the reconciling power of the Gospel.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the privilege of living in a nation where we can participate in the governing process. In the midst of political division and anger, help us to remember that our primary identity is in Christ alone. Give us the wisdom to stand for truth with courage and the humility to engage with others in love. May our interactions reflect your character and bring glory to your name, not to any earthly party. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Seeking His Kingdom First,
Gene
Because Life Begins at Calvary
