Paul wrote to young Timothy, likely in his late 20s or early 30s, though we can't be sure, in 1 Timothy 2:1-4.
1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and
to come to the knowledge of the truth.
What would happen if believers truly prayed for our leaders as Paul urged Timothy? Sadly, I haven’t encouraged the church I pastor to pray enough for the leaders. I’ve wondered recently where we’d be as a nation if we took Paul’s urging to heart.
Paul urges prayer for leaders, including kings and high officials, so that people lead peaceful, godly, and dignified lives. This is good and pleasing to God, who wants everyone to be saved and know the truth, regardless of a leader's character or policies.
Ways to pray for leaders include asking for wisdom, discernment, wise counsel, societal peace for the church's mission, and salvation. Just sharing a few thoughts from someone who's getting closer to heading home!
Heavenly Father, we recognize your supreme authority over all nations and leaders. We pray for those in high positions, asking for wisdom, guidance, and godly counsel. Grant peace to our society so that your church may live a quiet and godly life, sharing your truth with everyone. In Jesus's name, Amen.
