Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
The command to "be strong and courageous" isn't about willpower but about trusting God, the trustworthy source of strength. When God called Joshua to lead Israel, he faced an intimidating task, but God's repeated charge was a promise: "The LORD your God is with you." Today, our challenges—career changes, crises, fears—can be equally daunting. This verse reminds us we're not alone; the same God who promised Joshua's presence extends that promise to us.
The command to "not be frightened and not be dismayed" addresses human fears that can paralyze us. Fear urges caution and avoidance, while discouragement makes us doubt our worth and fear failure. But God’s presence changes this. Knowing God is with us shifts our perspective. Courage isn't absence of fear, but moving forward in faith despite it, because we trust who holds the future. With God's presence, we can face the unknown with confidence, not because we know the outcome, but because we know who walks with us.
The second half of the verse, "...for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go," anchors the first, offering ultimate comfort and security. No matter where life leads—new chapters, tough conversations, or uncertain seasons—God's presence is unlimited. This promise empowers you to act boldly, knowing you are always under his guidance, protection, and strength.
Heavenly Father, thank you for your promise of eternal presence. When fear or discouragement tempt me to stop, help me remember you command me to be strong and courageous. Fill me with quiet confidence from knowing you are with me always. In Jesus' name, Amen.
God’s Got You,
Gene
